Adrian Paraz: Improving fitness requires an hour or more of aerobic exercise per day at least 5 days a week. Assuming you travel 12+ mph on the bike you will need to do at least a 12 mile commute to improve fitness if all you do is bike. That said, other exercise counts so 30-40 miles/week on a bike is a good start. There is no "right" distance to start. The main thing is to get out and ride. To start go whatever distance you can do comfortably at a moderate pace. You will find that you can increase distance quickly but one rule of thumb is 10% per week. It really helps to find others to cycle with, so consider joining a bike club for weekend rides. You DON'T have to be a great cyclist since clubs have rides at all levels ... and members love to give pointers....Show more

Monica Voltin: 35 miles/week is about 6 or 7 a day which is a good start, keeps you active and the weight off, but does not give you the excelll! ent aerobic endurance you gain if you cycle 1, 2 or even 3+ hours.Start with ten to a nice destination. If that gets boring, go for 15 or 20.you could also haul groceries on your bike for more fun....Show more
Rodolfo Merel: I prefer to gradually increase the distance and move forward for the better
